Sideways.

Finally saw Sideways, which is up for best picture this year, I believe. I don't really feel like waxxxxxing intellectual or philosophical or critical about it. I think that would certainly cheapen what the film was trying to do and trying to be, and really you should just go see it because it's more than worth it, and what the hell else are you going to go see this time of year anyway? Really, the only bad effect was that I really don't want to have any wine anytime soon, because I would really feel like a moron after the wine expertise displayed in this film. I should get my friend Chris (from Blog Collective) to teach me about wine sometime, or maybe he can guest-blog about wine here sometime or some such, etc. I hope you're not last-minute V-Day shopping, since that's less fun than last-minute Christmas shopping although I don't know why. I get homemade cookies and coffee and maybe some Asti, and that's pretty damned nice for a Monday.

I just watched Sideways on Sunday myself! I thought it was absolutely excellent.

I with you on the wine thing too. I don't think I could ever get as into it as the characters in the film were, but I do wish I had a stronger working knowledge of the vino and the veritas that it holds.

I loved the interplay between Miles and Maya when they're having the conversation about why they got into wine and what they love about it. I think it's impossible to not feel passionate about wine in that moment.

One of my favorite lines:

"Whenever you open it; that is the occassion."

I may have butchered it. Good line, though.

(ICY HOT is Chris, the wine-lover I referred to.) Chris, come to Southern Illinois, and we'll go see the film, and you can tell me about wine, and we'll go to the vineyards around here and in Missouri. And get very drunk like on the beach in Quincy, only I won't puke the next day and swear off GIN forever.

A friend of mine told me about this, a few days prior to reading your post. It sounds decent, but the idea of wine doesn't spark anything inside of me. Although, I am just being ignorant, I'll probably check this film out just for the hell of it. I've heard a greater amount of good criticism about - versus the bad.

They need to make more movies about fishing. The last great film was "A River Runs Through It" based on the Norman Maclean story of the same title.

What about Alien V Predator? What was that if not a movie about fishing (with human bait)?

Oh...you meant a *good* movie about fishing.

Peter, check out Redtag, Stephen Shelley's blog (see links at right). Stephen's really into fly-fishing.
